The Smorgasbord Post

I think the title of this post is fitting because I'm about to dive into different topics regarding school.

For the past 3 out of my almost 9  years of teaching, I have decided on working on a goal for the school year.  I think the other 6 years, I was just trying to get it together, let's be honest now!!!

The first year of my change, I wanted to be more organized in my classroom, so that's what I worked on...I mean yes, I focused on other things, but if you as a teacher are not organized, trust me, there WILL BE chaos!!!

The second year, I decided to work on math.  I HATED math as a child. I mean dreaded it.  I hate to say this, but no on really sat down with me to teach me the background knowledge and get me to love it.  Well, I decided to take matters into my own hands and give my students a chance to like/love math.  I read blog posts, did my research, created math workstations, would stay up late finding fun lessons to get the kids involved in their learning, and so much more.  My kids would beg me to do math stations, they said it was their favorite time of day.  They weren't scared of it and that was a great feeling.

Last year, I wanted to get better at teaching writing.  Now my district does require us to follow special guidelines based on Norma Jackson, the writing guru.  So, two of my teammates had taken this amazing professional development the previous year about letting kids just write.  I won't go into specifics cause that's a whole other blog post...which I can write about, if you want!  Anyway, can I just say that my students' writing was AMAZING...the stories they would create on their own...just jaw dropping.  The beauty of it, was that they were using their imaginations and schema to create these funny and entertaining books.  Give a child some manilla paper, fold it up like a book, have them draw a couple lines at the bottom and tell them to write,,,,,watch them go, it's magic folks!!

Now we come to the present.  What are my goals for this year...well, I actually have 4...I'm crazy right?  The first two are at the top of my list because if I don't fix myself, my classroom environment won't be a happy one.

- First goal, is one that I have the most trouble with.  See, the thing is, when I'm surrounded by lots of people I tend to go into my imaginary shell and not speak up for what I truly believe in or what's best for my kids.  I want to work on being a bit more outspoken and leave my door open for other teachers to come in a learn from me or giving me feedback on how I can improve.  This will probably be my toughest one this year!!!

-Second goal, working on being more positive. I think I may have rolled my eyes or made ugly faces any time we had to do mandatory meetings or PLCs and what have you.  I don't want to be THAT teacher. I want people to be like, "wow, Judy is always so happy and welcoming..."  I want to appreciate the amazing job I have in an amazing school.  I want to be THAT teacher.  I seriously can not wait.....I didn't get my class list yet....no problem....after all these years of teaching, I've realized, ya know what....it's not a big deal!! It will get done!  So don't stress, don't eye roll....I promise...it will get done!!!!!!

Third goal, HOMEWORK change! For years, I've been assigning homework.  Some kids do it, some never get help at home..some never turn it in...ohh you know what I'm talking about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, this year i've decided to do a weekly packet...I created a monthly (week by week) HW calendar with different assignments the kids can do.  They have the entire week to get it done and it's nothing that is too hard for them to do. No more stressing about the small things...more time to worry about teaching them the right things!

Fourth goal-Spelling! Our bilingual department has mandated us to use Words Their Way.  Last year was the first year I have ever used it...I had no clue what I was doing to be perfectly honest.  This year, I have a better grasp of it and do not plan on giving spelling tests EVERY single Friday.  I mean, why? I want my students to learn spelling patterns not just memorize words.  There, I said it!

Well, if you got to this point, I congratulate you.  Now, here's a few pictures of a new product  I made for my classroom.  They are shape posters, Melonheadz edition! Summer, where did you go?

Hey guys,

It feels like just yesterday I was turning in my keys for the summer.  Golly, it flew by quick!
I don't report back for another few weeks but it's right around the corner.

I have been enjoying my summer as much as I can...traveling here and there. Haven't been back home in Texas for no more than 5 days when I did have to go back.

I was in Punta Cana last week for a friend's wedding. She and I worked together during our first few years of teaching.  She's a very sweet girl and teaching is her passion.  I was so happy I could be there for her.

So, last night I decided to get back to work and pulled together some subway art in Spanish.  I did a search on TPT but there wasn't any available.

If you would like a copy for yourself, the first three to leave me a comment with your e-mail address will have it! If not, please click on the first poster to take you to my shop!

They also come in white!

Bye guys! Hope you're enjoying the rest of your summer!!

Tpt Seller Challenge #1

Hey all! I have decided to join in the on the TPT seller challenge hosted by and

I decided to revamp my Back to School packet's cover page....see below..just eww...what was I thinking?

I decided to go with a much more simple cover page. The one I created last year was just so busy and the background was a hot mess.

I created this packet with the kids and teacher in mind.  The first few days of school can be quite over-whelming for teachers and the kiddos, so this packet is a simple print and use.  If you would like to check it out, click on the image to take you to my store.

Have a great week!!!!!

Financial Literacy Game!

Hey all!  So, I was kind of bored this morning and was searching for a financial literacy game! Guess what? NOTHING is out there for our small kiddos.
I mean there's packets of worksheets and what have you, but during math stations, I LOVE to give my kids work that they will enjoy and get a kick out of.

So I created my little math station game and I hope you will love it as well.

The financial literacy TEK is a new standard in our math curriculum this year and we need to make sure our kids gain some support for future years to come.  Also, it's money and relative to their lives, hello!

I have pictures below and have linked it to my store if you miss out on your chance to be one of the three people to grab it for free. :)

Go ahead, comment away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Leave your e-mail address please!!!!!!!

Poetry Helpers in Spanish!!!!!!

Hey guys! Just a really quick post!  I will be teaching poetry for the next 3 weeks and I will say that poetry is not a strong point of mine, AT ALL!!!

So after having anxiety attacks over it, I stopped, took a deep breath and realized, it's just first grade, CHILL!!!!

Then, came the idea for my newest packet.  It's a culmination of my crazy ideas and how I think my first graders will grasp the concept of poetry. Trust me, there's nothing like this out there. I have searched far and wide! Plus, mine is super cute :p

Please click on the picture below to take you to my store to check it out.

As always, first three to comment, get it FREE!!!!

Getting Ahead of the Game

Hey guys!  I hope you're all doing well!  I have been really lucky to have two "snow" (ice) days here in northern Texas.  This has enabled me to get work done!  Not only did I finish my March packet last week, I was able to finish April homework last night!!

Of all the homework packets I have created, I feel that April is my most favorite one yet!! :) Probably because it's my birth month! :)

Well, I'm off to clean my apt and do laundry. I'm also working on another packet, which I hope to have done in time for the sale tomorrow...but I am doubting that highly!

And Just like that...V-day is over!

Hey guys! Long time no blog!  I thought that by having this blog I would be able to keep up and post all the time, but the truth is, I am so busy! I decided to turn my life around and get healthy.  Since October I have lost 20 pounds.  I was never really "big" to begin with, but I knew that I wasn't doing well for my body type specifically.  Anyway, going to the gym takes up a lot of my free time, but now that I'm doing something called the Whole 30, I haven't been going to the gym as often because W 30 is helping me lose weight like nobody's business.

So, I'm here to tell you all three things.

One, last weekend I was invited to join the iTeach Bilingual Blog! Go here  to check it out! Seriously ya'll, it was one the greatest days of my life.  I had been patiently waiting to get invited to a blog of this magnitude for a while.  We are the biggest bilingual blog contributors out there.  How AMAZING is that!!! I feel so very blessed.

On another note, life has thrown me some wonderful twists and turns and I can't wait to share my happy news with everyone, when the time is right. Let's just say big changes are headed my way.
I truly believe in my heart that since, I've started letting God into my heart and life, things have turned around for me.  It's an unbelievable explanation.  :)

Last but not least, I finally got ahead of the game last weekend and finished my March homework packet!

If you click on the picture, it'll take you to my TPT store where you can read everything that's included for the month.

If you're the first three people to comment, you can have the packet for free!! Good luck! Until next time!!!
